Jim Murrin grew up in Greene County, Ohio. His early studies included photography, life drawing, and design but he chose dentistry for a career. Jim graduated with honors from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry then served as a dental officer in the US Air Force. He returned to civilian life and graduate school to specialize in endodontics.
Once established in endodontic practice, his interest in art resurfaced and he enrolled at Columbus College of Art and Design to study painting. After a few years there he ventured into plein air painting and found favorite painting destinations in coastal areas of Maine, California, and Florida. An art-focused tour of Cuba provided subject matter for recent work. Jim is represented by the Sharon Weiss Gallery in Short North Arts District, Columbus, Ohio.
“Wherever I am I see subject matter,” says Jim. “In the city or along a coastline, it doesn’t matter. I think I inherited that sensibility from my graphic artist mother who was keen on observation. I am often not sure what is about a particular pattern of light and shadow that evokes a response in me, but exploring a subject in paint is meditation. Geometric structure and painted light are central in my work. When I enter a gallery there are those paintings that pique my interest and pull me over to investigate. There is some form of subliminal communication that transpires. I hope viewers of my paintings have the same experience.”
Jim’s piece “Rescue” will be featured in Art for Life on September 15. See more of his work at jimmurrinart.com.
