The idea of meditation and contemplation play a major role in the paintings of artist Craig Carlisle. His artwork, notably his Big Head series, articulates indelible images which evoke an emotional response from the viewer. Each expression Carlisle creates in his paintings are meant to pull from one’s subconscious.
Carlisle creates a still-moment in his narrative art by juxtaposing recognizable elements while at the same time using minimal, sometimes flat color for the background. A complexity is built around the context of the work. The Heads he creates are anonymous, always genderless and almost child-like. Carlisle opts to place the focus for the viewer on the expression, thus eliminating the personal style one creates with hair or fashion.
Carlisle attended the Columbus College of Art and Design (BFA 1988). He has lived and maintained studios in New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles as well as Columbus Ohio. Carlisle is exclusively represented by George Billis Gallery, NYC. The artist has exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and his artwork is included in numerous collections.
